If you're like me and have recently made the jump to wearing magnifying reading glasses, you're probably wondering how to make them not only functional but also stylish. Well, fear not, because I've got some styling tips to share with you, so let's dive in and see how you can make your glasses a fashionable accessory that can enhance your overall look.
Let's talk frames: The right frames can elevate your entire look. and personally I have a soft spot for classic rectangular frames - they're stylish and practical, and suit almost every face shape. If you feel like kicking it up a notch, why not try cat-eye frames for that sassy retro vibe, or chic round frames for a trendy statement.
There's also the shape of your face to consider. Angular frames like rectangular or square shapes add definition and balance to round faces, while round or oval frames soften the strong angles of a square face and create a harmonious look. If you have an oval face then lucky you - most frame shapes complement oval faces.
For a heart-shaped face, the aim is to balance the wider forehead and narrower chin. Frames that draw attention downward by accentuating the eyes and cheekbones like cats-eye or rectangular frames work well.
If you have a diamond face avoid narrow or angular frames as they can emphasize the diamond shape. Your best choice will be oval or round frames that soften your angular features, or cats-eye that add width to the upper face.
Eye Colour: The importance of choosing a frame colour that compliments your eye colour is often overlooked and we run the risk of choosing a "pretty" colour rather than the "right" colour.
- Blue Eyes: Warm tones like tortoiseshell, brown or gold enhance their warmth. Complementary colors like shades of coral, peach, or warm pink can make blue eyes pop while a contrasting colour like black or navy can provide a striking contrast.
- Brown Eyes: Contrasting light frames such as pastels or champagne should be your usual go-to, but earthy shades like green, olive, or warm brown can also enhance the richness of brown eyes. For a more striking look, deep blues and purples can complement brown eyes.
- Green Eyes: Earthy shades like green or warm brown accentuate green eyes, but reddish hues, like deep burgundy or maroon also complement green eyes beautifully. For a contrasting look, try black or charcoal.
- Hazel Eyes: Make them shine with brown, green, or warm neutrals that accentuate the different colours that make up hazel eyes, but they can be also complemented by purple or violet frames that bring out the natural green and gold tones in hazel eyes. Dark frames like black or dark brown can create a dramatic contrast.
Coordinating your outfit: To keep things simple I stick to neutral-toned frames like black or brown, or even something with a subtle darker pattern - they'll go with anything. But don't shy away from bold and vibrant colours and patterns to add a touch of flair to your look, whether it's a pop of matching colour or something that makes a statement.
Makeup matters: When I wear my reading glasses, I focus on enhancing my eyes a bit more than usual - just a touch of mascara and well-defined eyebrows work wonders!. Consider using eyeshadow shades that enhance your eye color and add a subtle touch of elegance to your appearance.
And your hair: If you have long hair, consider wearing your hair up in a bun, a chignon or a ponytail. For shorter or shoulder-length hair, any hairstyle that keeps your hair away from your face will draw attention to the refined lines of your frames. Mornings are pretty hectic at my place so my go-to is a simple messy bun.
Confidence is key: Rocking your reading glasses with self-assurance is the ultimate styling secret. Embrace them with pride as an essential and practical fashion-forward accessory that adds to your unique style and personality.
